Final Major Project

My project analysed whether protests across the globe represented a new type of social mobilization and what role social media played in the organisation, unfolding and diffusion of protests. Media played a major role in mobilizing the Ukraine revolution and also the small protest organised by the Azerbaijani people in Westminster. It is a very different story in their homeland where they are controlled by authoritarian regimes that intervene directly in the activities of the media industries. In these countries authorities view social media as a threat as it has in the past targeted bloggers and other social-media activists who have called for public protests as they rely heavily on social networking websites to drum up support for their rallies. Protests are meant to be for the people and led by the people, however in today’s society it seems to be a corporate organization or the media’s role to mobilize a revolution.
